Perhaps, if you teach him to block out the other numbers himself. Try lining
straight edge (ruler, old envelope, whatever) along the current column he's
working on. Let me know if it helps.
I had a similar problem with my ten yr old and multiplying by two or more
digits. She'd do fine multiplying by ones, but when she got to the tens or
hundreds she would mix up the multiplication order. So, I taught her to cross
out the digit she just finished workin on. That way she works on one part at
time without mixing them up.
