We both knew about fuel fitlers at the time. What I did not
know years later was that Oldsmobile had another filter inside
the carburetor just after the gasline connection. That one
threw me until a racing enthusiast friend asked me if I had
ever changed it. :-)

Yes, dirt and/or metal filings in the carburetor would be a
'bad thing'. :-)
