 Hi Rick , What's up??
From the deepest of his mind, Rick Mcbroom dare to say to Javier Colter:
JC>> Yeah, I use Cool Edit too.. It's a great program..
RM> A good one, any way. Sure beats WavMaker, the OEM Compaq utility!
 And sound recorder.. :))
JC>> There's no need for this..
RM> I disagree. It depends on your specific system, really. And how much
RM> of a perfectionist you are, I suppose.
Well, different points of view.. :)
JC>> If you have enough memory and enough buffers you will be sure
JC>> that there's no clicks/chops in the audio file.
RM> I have 64 megs of RAM, my buffers are maxed out in Cool Edit's setup,
RM> and I /still/ get the occasional under-run. How much RAM do reckon I
 RM> need?
64mb is fine.. I hope you don't multitask while recording..
When I record I let the full machine to that application..
JC>> I don't understand why you must convert to that format. It's only
 JC>> with your CD-R?
RM> No, it's because conventional audio CD players won't read .WAV files,
RM> only CD Raw (.CDR) files.
I know, but just how i was telling you down here...
JC>> I have a Panasonic writer and I just grab the wav files and burn
JC>> them to cd audio tracks..
RM> If you're actually burning .WAV files onto the discs, then I must
RM> assume that you play them ONLY on your computer. You sure ain't gonna
RM> be able to play 'em on a regular CD deck!
Nononnoo.. I'm not recording the wav files as DATA, i'm recording
the files as AUDIO... And it can be played anywhere :)
RM> OTOH, if your discs /do/ play on a conventional audio CD player,
RM> then the mastering software must convert from .WAV to .CDR on the
 RM> fly.
I think this is what i'm doing..
RM> What brand/ version mastering software do you use?
 Easy-Cd Pro 2.0
 JC>> ..+/- 17 minutes to burn it to a cd at 4x.
RM> You burn at /4x/ with test-before-write off?! That's amazing.
Now I realize that you were talking about your IDE burner.. :-\
 I'm using a SCSI one.. :)
 RM>  Tell me more about your system;
RM> What CPU are you running?
 P166mmx
RM> How much RAM do you have?
 32
RM> What brand hard drive do you have? What are it's access time
 RM> specs?
I use a Quantum Fireball IDE UDMA2 (3.2 gb) The access time is about
 8-9 ms. I also use a Quantum Fireball SCSI-2 (2.0 gb).. I dunno the
access time.. But it seems that the IDE UDMA drive is FASTER than the
 SCSI-2 one..
RM> ARE your hard drive and CD burner IDE devices, or are they SCSI?
 As I told you:
 Recorder: SCSI
 HD: 1 IDE, 1 SCSI
RM> What mastering software do you use, exactly?
 Easy CD Pro 2.0
 RM> FWIW, I'm using a Compaq 4814 w/ 233 mhz Pentium II, 64 megs of RAM,
RM> a Quantum Bigfoot 6.4 gig IDE HD (<14 ms average seek time), my CD-R
RM> is a Philips OmniWriter IDE internal, and I use the HyCD mastering
 RM> suite (OEM version).
I think your problems comes from the Bigfoot drive.. I been told that
those drivers are VERY SLOW to cd-recording..
RM> From what I've been able to gather on usenet, and on the Adaptec,
RM> HyCD and Philips support sites, you're having exceptional luck. Very,
RM> very few folks are getting that level of performance from IDE burners,
RM> as far as I can tell. Some are having bona-fide nightmares, with
RM> problems far exceeding those that I've had...
I didn't realize you were talking about *IDE* burners.. Sorry..
