subject: Gas Prices vs. Mileage

JH> TA> advise our Seniors group that a tank of high test every now and
JH> TA> then was more helpful cleaning the fuel injectors than any thing
JH> TA> one could buy of the shelf.

JH>I wonder what is the diff? Does the high test blend include more
JH>additives which can help clean the injectors?

NOT as I understand things. Teh Universal use of Fuel injection has
basicly mandidated ALL gae have spoem injector cleaning agent.
BUT it was true at one time. I quickly checked my Index of Consumers
Reports and the last trienm they did anything on Gasoline was in 1987.
They used to list those gasolines meeting the BMW test but I don't have
many back issues. I used to keep magazines but them when they started
pushing me out of my house I got rid of most of them.

JH> TA> BTW we just spent $1,600,00 to take care of our 94 Olds Cutlass
JH> TA> leaking top gasket, water pump and rear brakes

JH>I keep on being amazed at the current high cost of auto repairs (and
JH>parts). My wife's car recently needed water pump replacement, and that
JH>somehow ended up over $500 at the local Firestone.

Automobile repairs have become a Licence to Steal. Becaue of the
complexity of the modern computer control fuel and engine syatems it is
not really practical for the home machanic. THERY know they have yuo by
the "Short Hairs". I jsut had a 60,000 mile check done on my Subaru and
it was over $500. And that was just what is recommended. I am thankfull
that I don't own a BMW or a Mercedes. :-) :-)

JH> TA> (we will do the
JH> TA> front brakes in the fall inspection)(if it moves it wears 8-).
JH> TA> So we Olds folks should be all set for another 10 years!

JH>I'd think new front pads could be done for under $100, but the way
JH>things are going, looks like a good idea to save up and "brace
JH>yourself."

Could or Should is not in the Picture. Brakes are a famous place for the
AND UP scam artists.
I do my Front pads only myself but nowdays even the pads are getting
expensive. The dealer wants $100 for a set of front pads. I pay about
$60 form my "Friendly" auto parts store. I could get them a bit cheaper
than that but I want GOOD quality pads myslef. I suspect my $60 pads
are quite a bit better then the Dealer Pads at $100
