Elf were Deep Purple's backing band for the last mark 3 tour that Blackmore 
played on, and their line-up was : Ronnie James Dio (vocals), Gary Driscoll 
(drums), Craig Gruber (Bass), Mickey Lee Soule (keyboard) and Steve Edwards 
(guitar). As you can see, if you replace Edwards with Blackmore, you have 
Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow !
As for as the styles go, yes I do think that the majority of Deep Purple's 
material is progressive, and probably the first 4 Rainbow studio albums as 
well.
I've also discovered that Rainbow released an album about this time last year 
(in the UK at least), but nobody I know admits to owning a copy, so I don't 
know how good it is, or even who played on it )-:
