It can lower the octane requirement a bit.
Some years back before wide pouplarity of Fuel Injection there was a
scheme for letting Manifold Vacuum draw a Alcohol/Water Mixture into the
combustion chamber. Really helped in keeping the Combustion chamber
clean.
Then rembember the Special Fluid for the Aluminum Block Olds Turbo
engine? That allowed Higher Compression ratios then pump gas would
handle.
