It's better to consider the process as pasturizing, not actually
sterilizing that soil. You are right, actually baking it will 1)
stink the place out, and 2) render the soil useless. One suggested
method was to use a 22 quart baked enamel canning kettle. Place the
dampened, (It *must* be damp - it's the heat of the steam that will do
the trick) - soil into the kettle and seal the top with some heavy
guage aluminum foil. Insert a meat thermomenter through the center
of the foil, and well down into the soil. The temperature of the
soil must rise to 180 degrees (F), and be maintained for thirty
minutes. (Hotter is NOT better). When finished, remove the foil and
stir up the soil - then allow it to cool. Be careful you don't
somehow contaminate it before or while it's in storage.
