I know that GTE has been working with MicroSoft out in Redmond, WA
on a new technology, that would allow twice the rate of transfer of
56kb modems, over conventional phone lines. They're probably using
Rockwell based modems then, since they were supposed to use K56Flex,
when they went to 56kb.
I'll stick with my "cable modem". :)

Bob,
PD>> AND... they said it would cost about what we are currently
PD>> paying for X2-K56 modems..
DB>> Hmmm... considering by the mid-1998, I should be hooked up to
DB>> ADSL with 6mbps/640kbps, I find an announcement about
DB>> 1Mbps/128kbps to be cold pancakes and no honey. It'll cost
DB>> around $60 per month plus needing a NIC card.
BJ> That's what the phone company will charge. The ISP charge for that
BJ> kind of bandwidth will be staggering. :-(
Personally, I'm using a cable modem, hooked to a 10mbps EtherNet card.
Costs about $60.00 p/mth total. This isn't too bad, when you consider
that most folks who are on line a lot have a separate phone line.
Let's say this line on average is $15.00 - $20.00 p/mth. Then add the
typical $20.00 p/mth InterNet account fee. The $60.00 I pay includes
the InterNet account. It's not that big of a difference, to have the
performance. As an example, I sucked down IE 4.0 (24.5 Meg) in less
than 3 minutes. I'll pay the extra $20.00 - $25.00. :)
