I don't know a lot about your particular phone, but I do know a bit 
about wide-area networking over wireless - albeit more on the Windows 
side of things.

Typically when you purchase a wireless service you are paying an ISP - 
which most times is your carrier - for the privilege of using their 
network to send data. CDPD, CDMA, UMTS, GPRS, etc., all work this way. 
You pay the carrier for a data plan and that allows you to move data 
over their network.

Assuming that your carrier offers some service like this, I would 
suspect you should talk to them about using your phone for data traffic.
I'm also a little confused - "just as general as a land line modem" is 
hard for me to understand, since a land line modem would still require 
something to connect to in order to be able to send traffic. You can 
change ISPs on a land line modem, of course, but you can also (at least 
some of the time, depending on the technology of the handset) change 
wireless carriers...
