Typically when you purchase a wireless service you are paying an ISP - which most times is your carrier - for the privilege of using their network to send data. CDPD, CDMA, UMTS, GPRS, etc., all work this way. You pay the carrier for a data plan and that allows you to move data over their network. Assuming that your carrier offers some service like this, I would suspect you should talk to them about using your phone for data traffic. I'm also a little confused - "just as general as a land line modem" is hard for me to understand, since a land line modem would still require something to connect to in order to be able to send traffic. You can change ISPs on a land line modem, of course, but you can also (at least some of the time, depending on the technology of the handset) change wireless carriers... John Yahoo!
