RT> How old is the earth?
ND> I believe a few thousand years, 6K to 10K. If you want to debate on
ND> this subject, I'd like to take it into another echo.
MB> I, for one, would like to know why you place such a small number
MB> there - we do, after all, have concrete evidence: one in particular
 MB> (and there are many bits of evidence) is _fossilized_ dinosaur bones;
MB> which in order to become fossiled must change from bone to stone,
MB> which takes literally _millions_ of years.
Your gross ignorance can be corrected by a conversation with
any professional paleontologist. This leads me to ask: Where
did you get such nonsense from?
"fossilize" does not mean to change from bone to stone -- that's
"petrify" (any dinosaur bone dug up is a fossil). A fully
petrified dinosaur bone is rare (compared to the number of
dinosaur bones found). And, most of the petrifaction process
usually occurs in mere hundreds of years.
MB> If you are one who states
MB> that God only makes it _appear_ the earth is much older than it is...
MB> then there must be a reason why God would _deceive_ mankind into
MB> thinking the earth is older than it is - and this would be a
 MB> contradiction of terms.
Considering that I never met a person, who by reading the
Bible, came to the conclusion that the Earth is old, but
many people, who by reading the Bible, came to the conclusion
that the Earth is young, in spite of what they were taught
in public schools... Why do you call God a deceiver? ('cause
the Bible text makes the Earth appear young)
As for science, there are some measures which seem to indicate an
old earth, and some indicate a young earth. Why do you ignore
those measures that don't support your view? ('cause some bogus
hypothesis makes it easy, or you're unaware) The apparent
conflict of evidence is merely a reflection of our lack of
knowledge.
MB> There is no way I'm going to believe in a
MB> God who lies. The earth is 5 or so billion years old, give or take
MB> several million years. That's what irrefutable physical evidence
MB> tells us, and the Bible does NOT contradict that evidence.
First, what irrefutable evidence placed the date of the Earth at
5 billion years? (hint: there is no chemical or mechanical
process that can be used to give the earth such an age, and not
even an educated Evolutionist would claim that any Earth rock has
been reliably dated at 5 billion years.) Secondly, I would like
to hear what you think the Bible says. (Theistic Evolutionists,
whatever, spend a lot of time saying that their science doesn't
contradict the Bible, but they seem to spend no time supporting
that claim)
 MB> It is
MB> some people's interpretation of what the Bible says, that contradicts
MB> actual physical evidence - and that's plain and simple arrogance.
Arrogance is thinking that the human (even humanistic) quest
for knowledge is of such a quality that the Word of God should
be interpreted in a manner consistent with human findings
rather than the other way around.
MB> But I do believe this whole universe was created by the one God -
MB> only I don't believe he _lies_ about the age of the earth, anymore
MB> than He would lie about whether or not it's raining outside.
What do you think God did?
 MB> If you
MB> see it raining, then it is raining - and if you see fossilized
MB> dinosaur bones, then the earth is several billion years old.
Just don't carbon date that fossil!
