Hi Murray. Someone (You?) left a copy of the October issue of this
mag on the back table at the TBCS UG meeting last night. Surprised
that it was still there as we left at the tail end of the group.
There was an article about one of my former bosses, MGen Luther
Richmond who was USAFE IG part of the time while I was there, 63-66.
He was shot down by flak, flying a P-51B in April 44 while strafing
an Fw190 field in NE Germany and spent time in Stalag Luft 1 with
Gabreski, Zemke, Spicer and other notables. I've only run into him
twice since. His sqdn, 486 FS, had just transition from P-47D's to
the P-51B's and C's. I wonder if this was an improvement over the
47 if they were tasked primarily for strafing but guess the 352 FG
also had bomber escort duties. Gen Richmond shot down one 190
and other's also had victories.
The article's author, Marc L. Hamel, also refers to a book by
Lt Col Lynn Farnol, "To the Limi tOf Their Endurance" about the
VIII th Fighter Command. If anyone knows of a source for this
book, I'd appreciate it.
Col Ken Skeen was another former POW who was with me in 63-65. He
had transferred from the RAF to the the AAF, and was shot down while
strafing a barge on the Rhine. He said the barge captain was pretty
P***ed when he fished him out of the water! Ken also flew F-105
missions while serving a tour at 7th AF Hq. I haven't seen him since
then. Anybody remember him? (This was not in the mag)
Also in this issue was a blurb about what caused the Mosquito crash
last July was a failure in the left engine's carb. Also a report on
the scrapping of aircraft at the now closed Florence SC Air & Missile
Museum. They quote a $4.2 Mil moving cost! I notice that the fighters
and Neptune are still at the CW/St Pete airport. They are supposed to
be moved to Wauchula but I don't think their cost projections are any
where near that.
I'll save the Mag if you want it. BTW, I won the ME card maker CD
last night. I'll give you back your old tickets if you want. ;-)
