RF> This may sound odd, but I thought I would post this. I have one child
RF> who has trouble concentrating and gets mixed up when needed to do
RF> several things at once in order to do a project. Like writing a paper.
RF> You need to gather info, write notes, make an outline and so on in a
RF> particular order. My Jeremy, who is ADHD, has a hard time with this.
RF> He also has a hard time with ABC order when looking it up in a
RF> dictionary or remembering that P comes after D. So I discovered
RF> something that is helping him. We play card game called Rummy. With
RF> this game he is forced to concentrate, put cards in color, picture,
RF> letters and number order. He has to look at all his opponets cards to
RF> make decisions as to whether to go on looking for a certain play or
RF> quit and go to something else. He also has to remember what other
RF> players have picked up and kept in order to decide what to throw away.
RF> I found that it is helping him learn concentration and the other
RF> things quite well. He is also learning to accept help from others more
RF> easily. I know this is not the same thing as school, but the concept
RF> of teaching him and being able to help him understand that he can do it
RF> is really helping his self esteem along with actually forcing him to
RF> concentrate and follow a designated order of things. Thought I would
RF> bring this out.

Hi Regina,
You have discovered the best tool in the world. Doing what works best
for your child. :) I have been using this same method for years for all
children. Games are designed for repetitive play and playing is
practicing. :) Ultimately, practicing is learning.
There are all sorts of games that you can utilize and invent. I have
several game boards that I created using poetry, riddles, nursery
rhymes, and memory placement.
You have hit the jackpot and with your obvious creativity you can come
up with more games and manipulatives to help your child.
If I can be of any help, post me. I have been home schooling for over 13
yrs and have worked with children with special needs just as long.
Keep up the good work! :)
