Thanks for describing the unusual site. Here's a couple of odd ones, sorry
he
details are from memory.
The NSW Navy [preceding Federation in 1900] operated a large munitions
storage/ test complex at Silverwater on the Parramatta River. The
ommonwealth
took this over and until about 1985 the US Navy shared the site- off limits
o
unauthorised visits. I was there with a National Trust team then, assessing
the place for possible conservation. I felt suspicious of some large lead
lined cases with US markings, I wondered if........?
The site had one dockside crane and about 40 kM of electric tramway,
connecting the old stone buildings, most of which were largely below ground
with little exposure above- to limit damage from any calamity. The buildings
being far apart, the extensive tramway provide freight and personnel transit.
A film has been made recently for historical reasons, not likely to be
released for a long time I guess.
Another location, at Cowra I think, has a tricycle museum. You know, the
fettlers' wagons once self propelled by manpower then later by wee petrol
engines. If anyone wants to have more details than I can remember then Brian
Rowling of 42 Pemberton St PARRAMATTA NSW 2150 will be pleased to reply. He
makes rail historical films, and is a crazy O gauge modeller.
