Kinda like the location at the last concert I was privy to backstage access.
There was no separate monitor mix so everything ran from the foh board,
BESIDE the stage. I went out into the crowd about mid way from the stage to
the side of the nearest building (which would bounce back the sound) (outside
concert at White's Country Store in Seguin for Darrell McCall's concert two
weekends ago). The sound man was attempting to run sound from the side,
without having to go in front of the crowd to get levels set... and he kept
saying, "I can't tell what I'm doing!" - Geesh... I headed to a spot near
where the first "envelope" should close and listened. I went back and gave
him my recommendations. Being 1) a woman first 2)someone who he didn't know
anything about, he said, "No way..." The mix was typical smiley face and the
vocals were so weak that Darrell could barely be heard except when he pushed
vocals heavily. I told the *soundman*, "Go listen out front...where you
should be anyway!" Off he went in a huff, but came back in with his "tail
between his legs", saying, "You're right" and redid the mix. Later, as the
evening progressed and stage volume increased (as per normal in a drinking
atmosphere!), the mids started ringing due to the increase of amps on
stage... He couldn't find the problem, although there were 4 channels with
mids nearly wide open. (no solo on the board -sigh). I showed him which ones
to check, even told him it would be the fiddle... "No way!" was again his
answer. Then, about 2 songs later, the "lightbulb" finally went off
overhead, and he went through each mid setting and found the ring - AHA, the
fiddle!
