Imagine the Somme with a long corridor the width of a street marked out
with  8 foot high nets on each side & then a couple of foot in from
that, solid wooden fence posts with rope strung between them...if the ball
was "in the ropes" then it was a bizarre combination of a scrum
& a tug of war..
