There IS no "THE China of today."

There's a country of 1.2 billion ranging from dust-poor goatherds in
Xinjiang to real-estate gazillionaires. I'll bet that variations in how
tightly/loosely the local or regional CP holds the reins -- which matters
more 98% of the time than any dicta from Beijing --  are greater than the
mean variation in government style between, say, Mississippi and Sweden.
