GB2RS NEWS BROADCAST
Good morning / evening. It's Sunday the 22nd of February [1998] and
here is the GB2RS news broadcast, prepared by the RSGB and intended
for all radio amateurs and short-wave listeners.
Today, the RSGB National VHF Convention takes place at Sandown Park
Exhibition Centre, Esher in Surrey. Attractions include a trade show,
lecture streams, an RSGB book and information stand, specialist RSGB
committees and Morse tests.
The UK Six Metre Group will be holding its Annual General Meeting
during the convention and has also arranged to give two lectures
entitled '6-metre power amplifier design and construction' and
'Working Europe on 6-metres from Down Under'.
The United Kingdom Radio Society will also be attending the convention
and will be located beside the BATC and Home Counties ATV Group.
Further details about the VHF Convention can be found in the February
RadCom.
Some more records have been achieved on the new 136 kilohertz band.
Four stations in south-east England have worked EI0CF who is located
at Malin Head, on the northernmost tip of the island of Ireland. On
Friday, the 13th, G3LNP in Hertfordshire exchanged 429 reports with
EI0CF for the first two-way contact on the band between two different
countries. Over the next two days, three Sussex operators - G3LDO,
G3GRO and G3KAU - also worked the Irish station. The distance between
G3LDO and EI0CF is 673km, and is currently a world record for a
two-way on 136kHz.
The first RTTY transmission took place on the 8th when G4FEV's
transmitted 15 watts of 170Hz shift RTTY to G4FFC. The best DX so far
is a report from G4GVC some 50km away. G3LNP has also been
experimenting with frequency-tailored SSB.
The March edition of RadCom which is due to be posted to all RSGB
members tomorrow, contains an article on how to get started on this
new LF band.
More than a hundred special event stations are on the air this
weekend, the 21st and 22nd of February, for the annual Guides Thinking
Day on the Air. This event is similar to Jamboree on the Air and
provides a great opportunity to introduce amateur radio to groups of
young people.
The Radiocommunications Agency has announced a change to the rules for
applying for club licences. Ordinarily, three licensed amateurs must
be part of the club, but there was an exception for educational
establishments where it was difficult to comply with this regulation.
The RA has extended this facility to youth organisations such as the
Brownies, Guides, Cubs and Scouts. In all other cases, three licensed
amateurs will still be needed to apply for a club licence.
Congratulations to nine year old Jenny Doyle, 2E1FZY, who has passed
her 12 words per minute Morse test without a single error in sending
or receiving. We understand that this makes her the youngest person to
have accomplished this feat - unless any of our listeners know
otherwise. Jenny is a member of the Bromsgrove and District Amateur
Radio Club and her Morse tutor was John Burford, G4OAD.
And now some international and national beacon news:
The five-band HF beacons in Japan, Sri Lanka, Madeira and California
are currently off the air. It is hoped that the W6 beacon will be
restored to service quite soon but it is not known how long it will be
before the other sites become operational again. Our thanks to IARU
Region One HF Beacon Co-ordinator Professor Martin Harrison, G3USF,
for this information.
Closer to home, the Microwave beacon GB3SCX was removed from service
for maintenance work on Tuesday the 17th of February. For more
information contact keeper G4GHP whose address is correct in the RSGB
Yearbook.
And the 23-centimetre beacon GB3IOW, in the Isle of Wight, was back on
the air on Monday the 16th of February after being out of service for
more than two weeks. More details from beacon keeper Bob Williams,
G8MBU, whose address is correct in the RSGB Yearbook.
Now news of two club anniversaries: The Siemens Amateur Radio Club in
Nottingham is holding a meeting of all its past and present members to
celebrate its 25th anniversary. The event will take place on Thursday
the 7th of May and all those wishing to attend should contact Chris,
G4VFK on 01159 433387 during office hours.
And the Shefford and District Amateur Radio Society is celebrating its
50th anniversary with a special gathering on Thursday the 14th of May.
Past and present members are invited. For more information contact
Derek, G4JLP on 01462 851722.

PROPAGATION NEWS
And now the solar factual data for the period from the 9th to the 15th
of February, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS:
Solar activity remained at very low levels except for the 12th when a
single C-class solar flare increased levels to 'low'. Solar flux
levels increased from 84 on the 9th, to 107 units by the 15th. The
average was 93. The 90 day solar flux average on the 15th was 96, the
same as last week. X-Ray flux increased from A4.3 to B3.7 units as the
sun became more active. The average was A7.7. Geomagnetic activity was
mostly 'unsettled' but, from the 13th, levels declined to 'quiet'. The
average Ap index was 7. Solar wind speeds varied between 270 and 450
kilometres per second for the period from the 2nd to the 8th of
February. Particle densities varied between 2 and 15 particles per
cubic centimetre. Exceptions were on the 5th and the 8th, when 40 and
27 particles per cubic centimetre were recorded. Bz varied between
minus 7 and plus 7 nanoTeslas throughout.
Now the ionospheric data for the period from the 6th to the 12th of
February. The F2 daytime critical frequencies at Juliusruh varied
between 7MHz to 7.8MHz, and averaged 7.4MHz. The darkness hour lows
declined from 2.4MHz on the 6th to 1.6MHz by the 10th. The average was
2.2MHz. Daytime highs were between 1300 and 1400 hours every day
except on the 6th and the 7th when the highs were at 0900 and 1000
respectively. Darkness hour lows were at 0500, but on the 8th it was
at 2200. Spread-F took place on the 8th and the 12th.
And now the solar forecast. This week the more active side of the sun
will be looking our way. Solar activity should be low most days but
activity could be at moderate levels particularly in the next few
days. Solar flux levels are expected to be into the 100s, but may
decline towards next weekend. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be
mostly 'quiet', except for a short time around mid week when levels
could increase. MUFs during daylight hours, at equal latitudes, are
likely to be 23MHz for the south and 20MHz for the north. Paths this
week to the East coast of North America are expected to have a maximum
usable frequency of 23MHz, with a 50 per cent success rate. However,
the optimum working frequency, with a 90 per cent success rate, will
be about 18MHz. The best time to try this path will be between 1400
and 1700UTC.
And that's the end of the solar information.
