Disneyland Announces New Nighttime Spectacular --
Slates Final Run of Main Street Electrical Parade
  Glowing, Glowing, Gone...
Disneyland Resort has announced plans for a year-long good-bye celebration
for an old friend, The Main Street Electrical Parade. The venerable parade
makes its last runs through the Park beginning March 30, 1996, and will be
replaced the following year with a new nighttime spectacular.
Disneyland has long been the trend-setter for entertainment, setting the
industry standard for theme park experiences with FANTASMIC!, The Lion
King Celebration, The Spirit of Pocahontas, and the Classic Main Street
Electrical Parade. The new 1997 spectacular will continue this tradition
by incorporating magical new special effects and one-of-a-kind theatrical
show elements into the evening extravaganza.
"As the flagship for Disney parks, Disneyland leads in innovation and
change," notes Mike Davis, Disneyland vice president of entertainment.
"The longevity and success of The Main Street Electrical Parade has
provided us with the opportunity to create a new nighttime spectacular
to take Disneyland into the new millennium."
But before the new show debuts, Disneyland will give its guests the
opportunity to experience and honor the original Main Street Electrical
Parade, the most popular and enduring parade in Disneyland history. Its
farewell tour will proceed through the Magic Kingdom during evenings
beginning March 30, 1996 and concluding forever in October 1996. Special
classic commemorative Main Street Electrical Parade merchandise will also
be available for purchase at the Park.
Of all the entertainment experiences presented at Disneyland throughout
its 41-year history, it is The Main Street Electrical Parade that is most
often cited for establishing the Park's benchmark for incomparable
entertainment. The technical achievements of the parade, including the
musical and theatrical staging of the procession's more than 40 units
(which stretch as long as 112 feet in length and tower more than 23 feet
in height) remain highly regarded among Park guests and the theme park
  industry.
The spectacle is also noted for its unforgettable arrangement of "Baroque
Hoedown" -- the parade's snappy theme song which, when blended with other
familiar songs, creates a tune of tremendous popularity for frequent
guests. Indeed, the musical soundtrack from the classic parade remains
one of the most popular recordings sold at Disneyland.
When the parade debuted on June 17, 1972, it featured a half-million
twinkling lights upon a dozen floats, and nearly 100 live performers.
Following the parade's successful debut, new floats were added for
"Dumbo," "Alice In Wonderland," and an enchanting scene from "Cinderella"
involving dozens of dancers and an enormous clock striking midnight.
The parade went on hiatus during 1975 and 1976, to make way for a
Bicentennial celebration parade called "America On Parade." The Main
Street Electrical Parade was brought back in 1977 and was bigger and
brighter than ever before. New floats were added, including an enormous
figure of Elliot from "Pete's Dragon," which surprises guests by
disappearing and blowing steam from his fire-breathing nose!
The new parade featured its now-famous signature introduction -- the Blue
Fairy from "Pinocchio" waving her magical wand to signal the parade's
beginning, followed by Goofy in the Casey Jr. circus train from "Dumbo,"
pulling the parade's grand marquee: a large colorful drum with Mickey and
Minnie Mouse riding atop and waving to the crowds.
The Main Street Electrical Parade continued to grow and improve each
successive year, and in 1980, a grand finale float was added, featuring
a glittering 108-foot red, white and blue salute to America.
In 1985, after another two-year hiatus, the parade returned to Disneyland
with an impressive new Pleasure Island scene from "Pinocchio," a dramatic
pirate ship scene from "Peter Pan" and a sparkling look at the diamond
mine from "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."
Beginning in March 1996, Disneyland will honor The Main Street Electrical
Parade with a final season of dazzling nighttime performances. Then it
will be "lights out" for the Disneyland classic, having set the high
standards for Disney spectaculars and setting the stage for a whole new
generation of magic beginning in 1997.
