There's a cultural difference. The last rounds of a championship snooker
match can be something like "best of 35 frames" with a frame
lasting anything up to 20 minutes. The final round often lasts an entire
day and occasionally overflows into the next.
Cricket is the more extreme example, with Test matches lasting up to five
days - the general rule being the longer the match lasts, the more likely
it is to end in a draw.
I like American media are partly to blame, continually selling the idea
that if you don't see a result in the first ten minutes, it's not worth
watching. The USA doesn't really develop sportsmen who are also athletes.
However you denigrate football, it's 90 minutes of continuous effort with
very few and then only short breaks - an effort close to a 3/4 marathon.
American football stresses strength and skill, but it's an anaerobic sport
- very short bursts of activity, long pauses and frequent team swaps.
