If it's anything like the HP here, the "transparency" connector
powers a halogen bulb, and disconnects the bottom lighting. The attachment
has a receptacle for 35mm negatives, or slides which is then read by the
usual means.

I picked up an HP adapter for mine, but it was a later model with a
mini-DIN, where the scanner takes a normal size. Maybe one day... Knowing
HP, it likely won't be a straight-through pin number adapter that will
work, but it shouldn't be too hard to find the juice.
