Well Marty, here is a start. Com1 thru 4 have default addresses and
they share the same two IRQ's as defaults. Maybe with this information
you can assign a working combination to your modem.
COM1 - addr 03F8 IRQ 4
COM2 - addr 02F8 IRQ 3
COM3 - addr 03E8 IRQ 3
COM4 - addr 02E8 IRQ 4
You'd have to find out exactly what address and IRQ "this other hardware
piece" uses and then assign the same address and IRQ to COM4 although
there is a better way, IMHO. Why not use the same COM and IRQ for the
modem since they are on a switch. Another concideration is that WINDOWS
is not always compatible with COM4, if that is applicable to your setup.
IRQ 5, normally used by a second parrallel port, might be available on
your computer and might solve the problem also. Remember, a mouse is
also assigned a COM and uses the default IRQ for the port.
