X2 and K56 Flex are two proprietary, and different, protocols for
establishing 56Kbps download links with properly equipped remotes. They are
not compatible with each other, and a K56Flex client modem will not connect
at 56K with an X2 Host, and vice-versa.
Note the "client" and "host". The technology requires that the Host be
connected digitally to the telco, while the client has a standard analogue
connection. It also permits speeds _from_ the host at up to 56K, but _to_
the host is still limited to 33.6 or whatever you can manage. Therefore. it
will not be of much use to you except for connections to your ISP.
The ITU is expected to publish a 56K standard later in 1998, and chances are
it will be _neither_ K56Flex nor X2. Major manufacturers are offering free
upgrades for their 56K products to the new standard when announced, though.
For the moment, chose X2 or K56Flex based on what your ISP is using and make
that decision with the knowledge that you will have to upgrade to the
standard at some point.
Rick
