In a message to Peter about "qwk probs", Paul said:

Glad you mentioned this - You would be familiar with how qwkers can go
into the messages menu, select a conference and type in a message
number, and that, be it a good or bad thing, then instantly changes
their last read pointers in the OLR part of the system too. I used this
occasionally when I was QWKing, or tagging a new echo where I didn't
want the whole message base (for that echo) to be jammed down a
telephone line to me.
Well, that doesn't seem to work with my local maximus setup. Is there a
config setting somewhere to turn it on? I'd like to have it. Thanks.
While producing my latest QWK, 2000 odd messages had decided to appear
in the AVTech echo, 2000 or so being how big the message base is for it
at the moment, as I had to trash it a few weeks ago when Squish crashed
trying to toss into it when it was over 5000 deep and wouldn't renumber
them. So, I decided to try one more time to set the last read pointer
for AVTech back to something reasonable, and lo and behold, it stuck.
Damned if I know why it wouldn't do that before... :(
