This looks like an interesting thread, but i haven't been able to
follow any of it, because of the confusing way in which the previous
messages have been quoted.  JE, could you start using '>'s to indicate
previous text, adding an extra '>' at each stage, so as to give an
indication of the temporal unfolding of this discussion?

Also, since this is a new thread, could you try giving a quick summary
of what is being debated?
