Not backward compatible with less than 80MB/sec controllers.

Hi Don,

Well what with gastrointestinal acute haemmorage on Crhristmas Eve and
ongoing vehicle stalling problems that no-one seems to be able to
resolve, I have been a bit off-colour recently!
Yesterday after waiting anxiously for several weeks on the outcome of
the Telco's "qualification" of my line-status - have to have ISDN
removed to get the applied-for ADSL 512/28, I got cheesed off waiting
and rang them yet again as about 10 days previously they'd said it
should all be resolved in 5-working-days, only to be advised that I
can't get the service as I'm in a pair-gains situation here. That
depressed me somewhat as I was really looking forward to getting ADSL,
just like my neighbour 40ft. away, who's on the same exchange!

However , on Googling on "Telstra, pair-gains", I located a god page at
http://www.dataco.com.au/telstra_issues, which gave a good understanding
of the problems with pair-gains technology, and also interpretations of
the various ambiguous responses provided by Telstra, the national Telco
here. It also has telephone direct links to the ADSL section of Telstra
and I was luckyenough to encounter a technical support person who knew
about and was actually familiar with non-windoze Operating Systems!

He looked up my case number, and then advised me that my "hold" was
absolutely nothing todo with pair-gains problems, or distance, but was
solely as a result of lack ofadditional capacity at the local telephone
exchange [Central office switch], and to keep hounding them at about
three-monthly intervals!

So that made me rest easier!
There's still hope yet.

Mike
