Our particular Library was founded about the time of the Civil War (1860's). The director back then would ask state department people who travelled all over the world to keep their eyes open for rare books and buy them. Much our rare book collection was also donated. I suspect the safeguards were not as good 100 years ago in terms of tracking stolen items. Nowadays, it would be VERY difficult for stolen rare books or objects to be sold to legitimate museums and libraries without it being known that it was stolen. Private collectors are, of course, another story. Judy --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-4* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/1.45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 379/1 633/267 |
