I suppose we don't know.  Our particular Library was founded about the time of the
Civil War (1860's).  The director back then would ask state department people who
travelled all over the world to keep their eyes open for rare books and buy them.
Much our  rare book collection was also donated.  I suspect the safeguards
were not as
good 100 years ago in terms of tracking stolen items.

Nowadays, it would be VERY difficult for stolen rare books or objects to be sold to
legitimate museums and libraries without it being known that it was stolen. Private
collectors are, of course, another story.
