TS>-> putting it though it's paces ever since. Possibly, no probably,
TS>-> the best hand held scanner that I have ever had. Very sensitive
TS>-> with the
TS>It's a friggin HH?!? Nice! :)
Yes it is. Has a BNC rubber ducky antenna, which works pretty well.
Also, jacks on the side for power and audio output.
TS>-> The display has two indicators for priority scan, one "pri" on
TS>-> the lower part of the display, and when it is not receiv says
TS>-> "PSCAN" on the main display. In non priority, it says "SCAN" o
TS>-> main
TS>So, there's no aplhanumeric of any kind for, say.. programming in the
TS>city name, etc.?
No. It's not that big a deal, at least to me, but I guess some people
really want that.
TS>-> display.Tone can be turned off or on for the entire radio, but
TS>-> for individual channels. I haven't played with the searc can't say
TS>I can deal with that. Same thing on my Uniden 890xlt.
Yeah, it's not bad. If you want to disable the tone for a single channel
all you have to do is stop on the channel, enter the programming mode
and enter "00" as the tone. Unlike the 760, you don't have to reprogram
the frequency to change the tone.
S>-> 1) Delay is all or nothing.
TS>Yeah, I hate that when listening to trunked freqs. Oh well.
That follows the old Regency pattern. It was one of the bigger
annoyances, but all things considered, it's not that bad.
TS>-> 2) There is no way to keep the light on for more than 3 seconds.
TS>No biggie again.
I work at night, so it's a pain. However, in the mobile mount that I am
building for my car, there will be a map light to illuminate the
display.
TS>-> 3) The keyboard lock locks all functions, not just the frequency
TS>-> programming.
TS>Now _that_ I actually like, unless it locks the SCAN\MANUAL button(s)
TS>as well.
That's what it does, which is a pain. It would have been better if it
just locked the programming keys ala the 760. However, if I didn't
mention it, in addition to the manual button on the key board, there is
a channel selector knob on the top of the radio. This not only selects
channels, but during programming can be used to select tone, if you
don't have the chart handy.
S>-> 4) The biggest complaint of all, is that you can not search for
TS>-> tones or digital tones. Standard PL information is pretty easy to
TS>-> get around here, but DPL is tough. It really should allow you to
TS>-> program in a frequency and then search for the proper PL.
TS>Now I _think_ I know what you mean but....now on my Uniden 890xlt I
TS>can hit the "TONE" button and then use the wheel to search through
TS>the PL's untill I get audio. Is that what you mean it DOESN'T have?
Exactly. For conventional PL, that isn't a problem since I know almost
all of the ones that I want, and because of the way most of the regional
systems are set up, I can figure out the rest. However, with DPL it's a
major problem. However, a friend of mine has a scanner with a tone
reader, so he is going to try to research some of the agencies with DPL
in this area.
S>One way to cure that would be to get a Scanner Master book(the BIG
TS>one) for your area, if they have them, because they list the PL\DPL.
I didn't know that Scanner Master listed DPL too. I am going to see what
my friend can come up with before I drop the big bucks on a Scanner
Master book.
TS>-> I paid $249.00 plus $5.00 for shipping, which isn't bad. I figure
TS>-> another $30.00 for a case and and mobile mount, DC power cord, and
TS>-> NiCads.
TS>-> It will definitely do until the Uniden trunking tracker is
TS>-> available, and maybe even then.
TS>That's a nice price. Really nice. But what's this Uniden
TS>trunking tracker you spoke of, please? Now you got me thinking of
TS>waiting for that unit instead! LOL!
There hasn't been much mention of it here, but on the Usenet newsgroups,
there is a lot of talk about a Uniden scanner due out in the spring that
will supposedly follow Motorola trunking systems. However, I decided I
would rather buy this now, and possibly sell it in the spring if the
Uniden radio really develops.
