-> Hee. When we were in FL, the folks in back of the subdivision were
-> 'better off' than some of us in the front. I had some good 'finds' by
-> driving around the next trash pickup day after Christmas - - snagged a
-> few good monitors that way.
Yeah, it's amazing what some toss out.
-> Also, when we were getting ready to move up here, I did some dumpster
-> looking to find packing boxes - - there were a couple of good-sized
-> office complexes just up the road, and I found a couple of working VGA
-> monitors that way, too.
-> WC> Were I more mobile I know of an excellent place to pick up a few
-> WC> systems a day for free.
-> WC> Local computer school junks out about ten systems a day to much problem
-> WC> to repair, I'd take the trouble.
-> Good. Maybe if you called and explained you situation, they would save
-> you a box or two. Maybe a friend (if I were nearby, I'd take you) or
-> your landlady would give you a ride over there to pick them up.
Naw, I won't put anyone to the trouble.
The bonanza is this is a facility for training the disabled up the road
which businesses donate their old systems to.
The ones that don't get fixed pronto go into the trash, I'm more
patient.
If I had to strip three machines for one I'd consider it a bargain at
free.
-> What I'm thinking about is your flexibility for future upgrades - - if
-> you can get yourself a std ATX mid or mini-tower case with a std ATX ps
-> vs that itty bitty 145W SFX PS in your current case - - even if the
-> mobos were bad, older ATX mainboards from maybe 5 yrs ago are now dirt
-> cheap, and that would give you an upgrade path when/if your current HP
-> Celeron system gets sick or dies. I know I have some MicroATX
-> mainboards here which cost me maybe a couple bucks apiece which will
-> take AMD Athlon/Duron chips up to 1GHz, which will accept those memory
-> sticks which are in your current Celeron system.
I found an upgrade shop near here that offers a few "whiteboxes"
for sale now and then.
Not too far and I need to check them out.
My specs are at least 5 slots and 512 Meg RAM.
I can't load their web page as they use Microsoft web page creation
tools that use non-standard HTML :-(
I should have jumped on that one box at $150 but it was a bad
week mobilitywise.
