OK, I reread this entire thread this morning (I keep the last 5000
messages in all message groups on this BBS) and it looks as if I owe you an
apology.
I misread the intent of what you said, and let my own biases get in the
way
of reading between the lines - doing a poor job of something I pride myself
on
doing well - removing emotion and hysteria and reading only what factual
information I can extract. I think you found a nerve that I thought I didn't
have.
I understand your concern and feeling for your fellow officer -
particularly one that is not a total stranger to you. I also understand that
almost anything can malfunction - but based on what I have read here, the
failure that is described nearly runs contrary to the laws of physics - and I
am inclined to believe that there are some pieces that we don't know.
The resulting injury is an incredibly horrid coincidence - even a trained
marksman would be hard-pressed to make that kind of a hit without first
clamping the leg in a vise. The loss of a leg is not a triviality, and it has
to have effeects on the officer and his colleagues that we won't be able to
define for several years.
That having been said, from the standpoint of mechanical design (validated
by a few mecahical engineers that I know) the Glock is the closest thing to a
safe and idiot-proof design out there today, and should not discharge when
dropped - but it shouldn't be dropped. Carelessness with a firearm has its
own rewards, all of them gruesome - and with LE ammo it gets only worse.
I will be interested to read the final report, including the report on the
mechanics of the weapon involved, and you may rest assured that any
recommended modifications will appear on mine as soon as I can get them.
My apologies for having exacerbated a painful situation for you. I am
sure,
however, that you understand how the inflammatory nature of what I read
could
lead me astray as to your true meaning and concern.
