following up a message from Martin Schiller to Patrick Moore:
 MS> As I said earlier, I beta-flashed two modems and I just tried to

I tried forcing the higher connects between the two SFM 288s with the +MS 
command. 
AT+MS=,,288 resulted in 28800 connect
AT+MS=,,336 resulted in additional tone during negotiation, but no connect.
AT+MS=,,312 resulted in additional tone during negotiation, but no connect.
