OK, Debbie brought in for me a plant from her mum's house called 
Kalanchoe Tubiflora. It's not the one I wanted (see below) but is 
of the same, er, tribe. It is making babies off the ends of its 
tubular leaves. 
Debbie says what I want is Kalanchoe Daigremontiana Tubiflora, 
and she had a book with pictures where this second thing looked 
more like what I remember.
I told her I would tell everyone how helpful the staff are at 
Reeves, Eglinton west of Scarlett Rd, here in sunny but chilly 
Toronto.
