Not particularly optimistic either--more like the glass is
half empty. Do you think we are incapable of change? Do you
think technology increases will make environmental
protection easier and cheaper in the future? I do, and
history has borne this out. Population is also slowly
decreasing in first-world countries-presumably due to tech
change and higher standard of living and resultant birth
control measures--this is a cultural change and a powerful
meme in today's world.
As for humans, are you dismissing the potential for humans
to launch a dedicated space project to terraform and
populate Mars and several potential moons--and even building
and launching interstellar generation ships eventually to
begin populating the galaxy? I think even the latter is
possible within another millennium. Also, in the relatively
near future humans may well become obselete, many opting to
form new species through genetic engineering--such "people"
will be able to function and live in modestly alien
environments, carrying the legacy of the human race on to
new scientific and technological heights.
I think the glass is more than half full!
