SK>-> Calif. Gov Pete Wilson (R) recently signed a law that
SK>-> requires many candidates for teaching credentials to study
SK>-> phonics (Lynch and Lembke, EDUCATION BEAT, 10/11). A companion
SK>-> bill provides $29M to schools for staff development and $1M to
SK>-> the CTC to develop an exam for new reading teachers.
Leave it to the Government to step in to the "rescue" once again on
behalf of education. Maybe it's a great idea in this case, I don't know
(but I doubt it). I've said all along that phonics is important (but it
is the least used reading strategy yet the one most pushed). I said
it's important...it should be taught....but alone it will not do the
job.
Research shows.....oh never mind....just take my word for it ok?
(Didn't think so....)
