Hello Roy -

--8<--cut

RJT>> Lots of really *bad* web sites out there!

CA>> Newbies are being encouraged to use W3C recommendations
CA>> without being told that no browser has caught up to those
CA>> new codes as yet.

RJT> Or worse yet, they're using some program to generate the
RJT> pages (the stuff "front page" puts out is truly awful),
RJT> never look at the resulting code,

My daughter does e-commerce for a living and set me up with
Maromedia Dreamweaver. I've never used Front Page.

RJT> and as long as it looks good on the machine that generated
RJT> it they don't worry about it.

Somewhat true. The lack of 100% support for W3C codes from
browser to browser doesn't help but then again, I think the W3C
are a bit nuts at times with some of their 'recommendations'.

RJT> I've taken pages that I wanted to save info from, which
RJT> started out at 150K in size, and pared it down, removing
RJT> all the junk, and ended up with something under 20K as a
RJT> result.

This is true but even good webpages can be reduced to text only
and become very very small text files. :-)

CA>> Then, when they want audio/video/animation they are told
CA>> to use FLASH even for small audio files. I intervened for
CA>> awhile on usenet then just gave up. It was becoming too
CA>> time consuming with everyone working against me. :-(

RJT> I refuse to install that particular plug-in. Some sites
RJT> won't work without it. Oh well, their loss.

Some very good ameteur animators use FLASH animation and I
enjoy seeing some of those. I have the plugin but also have an
addon for FireFox to block FLASH unless I click on the "F" icon.

RJT> Usually I have firefox telling me that the page wants
RJT> something of the sort and offering to install the plug-in
RJT> for me, but I just dismiss that, and then use that "remove
RJT> this object" option while viewing it. Between that and the
RJT> adblock plugin I look at pages that are a LOT less
RJT> cluttered than they start out being. :-)

RJT> And my adblock list just keeps on growing...

I also use adblock and it does help with all the 'clutter'. :-)
