SB> I recently changed ISP's from one which used a Linux Shell Account to
SB> one running an NT Server. Is there any problems to watch out for from
SB> ISP's running NT Servers?
SB> I'm running Warp4 FP4, Netscape Navigator/2 (November release), and
SB> Java 1.1.4, and I'm experiencing some difficulties.
SB> 1. I cannot telnet out with ZOC (3.051). I get a connection failure
SB> error after the modems have done some talking together. This
SB> worked fine on the old Linux ISP.
SB> I then tried to telnet using Warp's Telnet Client, and it worked
SB> fine. However, I need to use zmodem to d/l some mail
SB> packets/files from the bbs's I'm telnetting into.
SB> Any suggestions?
SB> 2. I seem to be getting a lot of spurious proxy server errors even
SB> though I apparently have the correct http proxy server defined.
SB> The kind of problems encountered are:-
SB> a) not connecting me with the site and giving me a fairly
SB> generic multiple response error message (#87 if I recall).
SB> In most cases (not all) If I keep selecting the same url
SB> then it might work after the 6th or 7th attempt.
SB> b) Similar to a) I get the proxy server error but the site
SB> then continues to load properly.
SB> c) Some pages don't appear to be cached since I can't seem to
SB> go back to them in the browser (fairly common occurrence).
SB> d) The site fails to load informing me I need browser
SB> supporting frames, which I obviously have and works most of
SB> the time.
SB> e) I get up to 3 characters on the top-leftmost corner of the
SB> screen when the html page is loading. Sometimes the page
SB> hangs at that point and sometimes the page loads but
SB> usually those 3 characters remain.
SB> f) Related to e) (i think) when this happens mostly the
SB> buttons are not displayed properly, and the box with the
SB> turned-up bottom-right corner appears instead.
SB> g) Sometimes the Java error box appears but I forget the error
SB> closing the box and continuing usually works.
SB> These are all common problems which never occured with my
SB> previous Linux ISP and kinda spoils the browsing experience :(
SB> Does anyone recognise the problems and have the solution to
SB> resolve them? I'd suspect there is 1 cause rather than individual
SB> unrelated problems.
SB> Thanks in advance,
SB> Stewart
My opinion is that your providers system is chocked full of
Windows specific wannabee Web standards while Linux (and
others) follow more tried and true standards. I'll bet
almost anything that if you connect to that same exact ISP
using all Windows stuff you'd have no problems.
I run both NT and OS/2 at home and support NT at work for a
living.
