 I ran the scenario past our Armorer, and his response was the only safe
handgun is the one that is unloaded.  Misfires and accidental discharges are 

fact of life.
Our prayers stay with him, and here's hoping he recovers in good spirits.  
Does
the department have administrative tasks he could be assigned, or offer
retraining?
