we're on a windstream 3M/768k DSL out here 15 miles from anywhere using barbed
wire for our lines
is roberts a cable or dsl service?
cable services are just like your network at work or possibly even at home...
they use what they call a concentrator which is basically a huge switch
connecting all the locations being served into one box for that traffic to then
move on to the 'net... the problem is that when the traffic in the concentrator
gets to be so much, all the traffic feeding each location is slowed down...
there is also a distance factor just like with DSL... the further away from the
concentrator you are, the lower your speeds will be...
look at it like this... there may be a concentrator allotted for an apartment
complex of 100 units... if there are only 50 residents using the connection,
everything is pretty much ok but when all the units are filled (say 95%), then
things may be noticibly slower at different times of the day... like, in the
afternoons when the kids all get out of school and get home to jump on the
'net... and the evenings when folks have had dinner and are playing online
first person shooter (FPS) games like quake... then there's also the video
feeds so that folks can watch their favorite shows and these days so many are
also doing VoIP (Voice over IP)... there's a huge amount of data being moved
compared to back in the day when things were just getting started...
