Hello Steven, MvdV>> A dos box in Windows is just that: a DOS box. It is just the MvdV>> opposite of OS/2 in text mode. Contrary to the latter is has the MvdV>> drawbacks of both Windows and DOS. A DOS box in Windows is MvdV>> subject to all the limitations of DOS. 640K should be enough for MvdV>> everybody and such. In addition to that it is slowed down by the MvdV>> Windows graphic shell. SH> Since my DOS boxes all have provision for both expanded or SH> extended memory up to at least 4 Mb, we must be talking SH> about different versions of Windows. As I said a DOS box in Windows has all the limitations of DOS. To use more that 640K one needs tricks like expanded or extended memory. You can only run 16 bit porogrammes and you can only use the extended/expanded memory for data. OS/2 in text mode on the other hand has the full memory available as a flat 32 bit address space. SH> As for speed, my primary PC has 512Mb of RAM and a PIII-864 mhz SH> processor so slowdowns are not a major problem. You wouldn't need such outlandish resources in the first place if your OS wasn't such a resource hog. OS/2 runs fine on a 40 MHz 386 with 8 Mb of ram. Have you ever compared MS Word with the good old WP5? I say as far as text processing goes, nothing has ever beaten WP5. Everything that came later only needed more memory and faster machines....
