subject: National anthem

BL> they like the sound of "We are Austaliennne"

BL> Personally, I find that song offensive. The music is more
BL> suited to a Mojo TV jingle, and the line "from many lands we
BL> come" really gets up my nose.

KR> all national anthems are ridiculous

I don't agree. Flags, national anthems, and stereotypes help build
families, tribes, nations and races. We are not so far removed from
the herd that we can exist as individuals alone. I am in favour of
whatever helps you make it through the night.

KR> , but at least the french have a good tune.

Everyone says that. The Marsellaise would go well to Irish tap dancing.
I love the words, too... especially the politically correct bit that goes
"formez vos battallions! marchons, marchons, qu'un sange impure n'abbeve
que nos sillons..." Form the militia! Let us march so that inpure blood
runs in our gutters... why can't we write words like that to Waltzing
Matilda?

Something like...

Once a jolly ocker formed into Militia, under the shade of a pub
awning, fucked the Asians, cut them up and drank the blood running in
the gutters... our land is girt by bludging abos.

Now *there's* a real national anthem to rival the Marsellaise!

KR> there was a really poor fucked up version of walzing matilda
KR> that was pushed in the sixties as the new anthem, basically the
KR> words said "we are australians, come near us and we will fuck
KR> you over" and came with a video clip of tanned blond
KR> lifesavers, raaf sabres peeling off and i think an abbo with
KR> boomerang and woomera just to show that it wasn't racist.

You miss the entire point of having anthems, flags, stereotypes and
patriotic songs like Waltzing Matilda. It gives us something to
identify with. The words mean nothing. "Come near us and we will fuck
you over" is very similar to the Marsellaise, put less poetically and
just as meaningless. It's meant to stir patriotism and the herd
instinct, and it does! Maybe you don't see yourself as part of our
herd. Naturally... you'd see it differently if you were a gnu in a
pride of lions.

My real objection to Advance Australia Fair is twofold: there are
too many high notes (like the US anthem) and the words are not
stirring enough. The only good word in the whole thing is "young".
We need more blond lifesafers and raaf sabres.

I can hardly wait till the next election.

Regards,
Bob
