TCP/IP is a networking protocol. It allows two computers connected to each
other (via a modem, paralell prot, ethernet card, etc) to talk to each
other, and allows messages from one computer to be forewarded through other
computers to a destination computer. This is how the internet works. OS/2
comes with SLIP drivers, which allow TCP/IP to work over the modem. If you
want to use OS/2 on a lan hooked up to internet, you need to get the OS/2
lan client package from IBM. The nifty thing about TCP/IP is that if you
know the other computer's address, you don't have to know which computers
to go through to get to it. As long as there IS a connection, the routing
is done automatically.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. This is similar to Zmodem in a
terminal program, it uses TCP/IP to upload and/or download files from
another computer onto your hard drive. You can suck files off of a
computer in australia if you have internet access. (I've done it.)

UUENCODE is a way of turning a binary file into text you can post in a
message. UUDECODE is the program that takes this long block of text and
turns it back into the binary file. (program, graphics, whatever. Doesn't
matter. That's the great thing about binary files.) This allows people to
post files in message bases (they take a dim view of this on fidonet.
Don't try it.) Or email files to each other.
