This may sound odd, but I thought I would post this. I have one child who
has trouble concentrating and gets mixed up when needed to do several things
at once in order to do a project. Like writing a paper. You need to gather
info, write notes, make an outline and so on in a particular order. My
Jeremy, who is ADHD, has a hard time with this. He also has a hard time with
ABC order when looking it up in a dictionary or remembering that P comes
after D. So I discovered something that is helping him. We play card game
called Rummy. With this game he is forced to concentrate, put cards in
color, picture, letters and number order. He has to look at all his opponets
cards to make decisions as to whether to go on looking for a certain play
or quit and go to something else. He also has to remember what other
players have picked up and kept in order to decide what to throw away. I
found that it is helping him learn concentration and the other things quite
well. He is also learning to accept help from others more easily. I know
this is not the same thing as school, but the concept of teaching him and
being able to help him understand that he can do it is really helping his
self esteem along with actually forcing him to concentrate and follow a
designated order of things. Thought I would bring this out.
