Chemically dependent? That's never been documented, in fact they tend to
forget to take them. Dependent as in relying upon them, or needing them?
Well, I've worn glasses since third grade and cannot read or drive without
them, so did I become dependent upon my glasses? or is it just that I need
them to function?
Think of it as akin to insulin.

Well, my son would perhaps do the same thing: but the result would last a day
or two, if we were lucky. Whether he is unable to internalize cause and
effect, or simply has too little impulse control for it to make a difference,
is hard to say.
