Replying to a message of Phil Payne to Gene McAloon: PP> From: Phil Payne >> I would tend to agree except that at least one court in the US has >> already PP> ruled >> that what is happening in Guantanamo is outside court jurisdiction. The PP> court's >> reasoning was that Guantanamo is foreign territory, as in fact it is, >> and American law doesn't apply. PP> To the rest of the world, this distinction is trivial. We see the US PP> behaving like the NAZIs. What I find interesting is the fact that U.S. Embassies and military installations outside of the US are usually considered to be US territory (subject to any treaty restrictions by the host country). A child born on a US base in Europe is a US citizen. Back in the 60's I was stationed on Okinawa. At the time it was a US possession (spoils of war, like the Kuriles, but I don't recall ever seeing it publicly listed as such). Okinawan citizens couldn't vote in US elections, f'rinstance, but US citizens there could. People of other US territories (also spoils of war, Samoa and Puerto RIco, f'rinstance) CAN vote in US elections. ---* Origin: Bob's Soapbox, Plattsmouth, Nebraska, USA (1:379/103.104) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 379/103 1 633/267 |
