subject: Idea for NFL realignment

aid:
Having confronted Dr. David, Ed Grinnell, International Man Of Mystery,
exclaimed:

DGR> ...it's not finalized at either the state or county level yet.
EG> It's going to happen. Cleveland and Houston were derailed by the
EG> politicians; Buffalo has taken care of that.

Well I did say there was no opposition at the state level...

DGR> Orchard Park citizen's group has sprung up protesting the hike in taxes
EG> A mere fleshwound. Outside of environmentalists, no citizen's group
EG> has ever successfully blocked a measure like this (They've forced
EG> votes or made votes closer, however, they've never gotten them
EG> blocked). Politicians have a much better chance of shutting down the
EG> project, however, with the potentially devasting effects of such a
EG> move, don't be surprised if these groups don't find a politically

I imagined it would have been hard to excited over "sin taxes", and
in this case it appears that is what has happened. The group has made
it's noise and has quietly slunked away back into obscurity.

EG> powerful ally (Don't be surprised, either, if a couple of the leaders
EG> end up floating on your side of the lake).

Oh, ick! Like we don't get enough floating down to us from them as it
is...

DGR> Don't feel too bad, we do receive the Buffalo stations in our
 DGR> area...
EG> Which means what? It certainly doesn't mean that you are on top of the
EG> pulse of the politicians, who ARE the ones who have driven teams away.

Oh, cool you're thrusters. I just meant that in your area
undoubtedly it was reported as a done deal, which it wasn't. Until the
ink is dried on the bill, never say never. And I certainly do keep up
on the pulse of politicians on both sides of the border. Politics is as
much an interest of mine as sports, and when you combine the two...well!
(I also believe I mentioned before that I find the NFL politics more
interesting than the game it self.)

EG> In every instance (look them up), moves were based on owners not
EG> getting what they wanted out of the stadium officials and the
EG> city/state politicians. Buffalo bent over backwards and more
EG> importantly, Toronto is incapable of giving Ralph Wilson the kind of
EG> revenue that he wants (I hear Canadians moaning about paying $15-$20

Actually the goods seats are usually about $30-$35.

EG> CDN for CFL games. Imagine their displeasure of having to regularly
EG> paying $50+ CDN and nearly double for their luxury boxes). There's

It's one of those Canadian anomalies, they don't mind paying the
extra cash for "world class" sports. Egads, does that make me American?

EG> nearly a 30,000 difference in seating in Toronto and while the Skydome
EG> has more luxury boxes, Wilson makes about the same from his boxes in
EG> Buffalo and a move to Toronto would mean either losing $11 mil per
EG> year in attendance revenue or increasing prices across the board. If
EG> Toronto is being mentioned publicly be any of the Bills' officials
EG> then they are being used as a pawn like Tampa was used by baseball
 EG> teams for years.
This is Toronto we're talking about here. They outlawed logic
years ago because it wasn't "world class". There wasn't anything you
said that didn't occur to me also, but trying to talk to the Hog Town
denizens is like talking to turnips....
                                        Sincerely Yours

                                        David G. Riess
