Hi,
My advice is practice, practice handwriting. I teach year 1 (5 turning 6 year
olds). By the end of this year - December in Australia, I would expect all
children to be getting the directions of all letters and numerals right.
Usually the problem is that the child knows what they look like but when they
actually go to write it they push the pencil the wrong way. If yopu watch
them doing it you can see it happen. The reason for the problem with p q and
b d is that they are already close despite the little tick on the q and d in
our style. s is another one they get wrong but it doesn;t look like anything
else.
Practice all the letters that start the same way at the same time ie a d c g
q etc as they all go anti clock wise. The do the clockwise b p h etc. Let her
trace yours. The only thing I can suggest is show her, watch her and don't be
too tough on her. If she has only just started school it will come. BUT she
does need to get this right as her spelling will suffer. If she is too busy
thinking about which way a letter goes she will loose the momentum of the
spelling word as a written flowing form.
Regards,
Erica.
