CG> I suspect that *any* sort of sand is better than not-sane, e.g.
CG> clay. There may be different qualities, and obviously sand from
CG> the roadside at Love Canal may not be the best I think that over
CG> the years i've just had better luck with sandy-soil than with
CG> non-sandy soil. I do recall reading once, a long time ago, that
CG> sand was good as a potting medium.
I've never had to grow in clay soil so have no idea, but from
what I read I guess sand might be less of a problem. Here in
Florida our "topsoil" is nothing more than beach sand really. I
have added tons of peat, compost and other organic matter to it
over the years......at least it seems like tons! It is much
improved from when I started, but it'll never resemble the
dark fertile soil I remember from the north.
CG> You got it. That's why each morning one lucky plant gets a half-
CG> litre cream container of water, with the plastic lid almost
CG> screwed shut, to drip-drain water to the lowest part. Then it
CG> waits ten days for its next drink.
Sometimes it's very difficult to water correctly. Some plants
drop dead without enough water and others rot from too much. It
takes awhile to figure out which is which! But I guess it's best
to stretch out the waterings as much as possible.
