That's still not true. You can buy a DVD and lend it out to a hundred of
your friends one at a time so they don't have to pay to see it in a theater
or to shell out for a DVD they are going to watch once.

I agree, but you seem to be saying the key to what is restricted by
copyright is anything that would decrease the author's ability to receive
compensation for his work. That's not true, copyright isn't meant to insure
that the author can extract maximum profit from a work, or to define what
is or isn't property, it is only to ensure that he has the ability to
receive some compensation for a limited time. It is a motivational
restriction not a property driven law.
