RP> 6 2/3 cups of peat moss
RP> 5 1/3 cups of perlite
RP> 4 cups of vermiculite
RP> 1 Tbs superphospate (only for rooted plants, I think)
RP> 2 cups of dolomite lime
RP> 2 cups of water
RP> After mixing put this in a plastic bag and allow it to sit for
RP> about two weeks so the lime has a chance to work. Notice - there
RP> is absolutely no soil in this mixture.
Thanks for the formula for a mix for cuttings. I was surprised at
how much dolomite was in it. I wouldn't have thought it would
need that much for that amount of mix. I recently had discovered
the soil in some containers I've been using in the garden for
veggies had become very acid. I had noticed things didn't seem
to want to grow well anymore and did a PH test, and was surprised
at how acid the soil had become over the years. I have added
some soil at each planting but I had never completely refulled
these pots in years. They are large 7 gallon ones. I tried
putting some dolomite in them but wasn't sure how much. Finally
decided to just buy new potting soil and use the old soil in the
garden since it's a peat, perlite, and vermiculite mix it should
be fine there.
RP> BTW - you might want to check out something called the Texas-Style
RP> Potting Method. You can buy - or make these pots yourself. It's
RP> an excellent way of keeping your plants at just the right moisture
RP> level - without a lot of daily work.
I've never heard of the Texas-Style potting method. You might
need to tell me a little more about that. Thanks for all your
other tips. Some of the cuttings I started in mid Oct. are
actually showing some growth now, so maybe they're gonna make it.
One more question, I noticed the impatiens I just started don't
look happy and have droppy leaves now. Is this normal? Should I
pick most of the leaves off? Or should I start over with some
new cuttings?
