-> straight COFFEE! I had my whole story set as to why I was not
-> drinking, but was never called upon to use it. I couldn't help but
-> think to myself, "these people aren't normal", I mean they should
-> be creasing each others wives, and throwing up in the garden, and
-> here they were just talking and enjoying themselves :-)
Got a pleasant shock at my first AA new Year's party. I was only 4
months sober, and pretty much figured fun parties were a thing of the
past for me. Went to the local AA Alkathon/party at the Token Club,
expecting it to be dismal and stiff. Walked in, got told four
hysterical jokes and hugged six times before I even reached the coffee
bar...and saw four perfectly sober middle-aged guys with arms aroud
each other's shoulders, swaying and singing as fine a spontaneous
barbershop rendition of "Sweet Adeline" as you could've heard in any
bar in the city. Best of all, one of them was wearing a tiny lampshade
as a party hat. I had the time of my life, complete with a packed
candlelight meeting at 3 am, and could remember it all the next day.
Loved it. Still do...I NEVER miss an Alkathon or other citywide AA
bash.
