The 49ers traded David G. Riess to the Jets for saying:
DGR> today. It's only a matter of time before I go for a coaching
DGR> certificate.
Excuse me? I'm sorry but several of the coaches that I know are stupid as
hell and don't even know the rules of the games that they're coaching. Don't
equate that certificate with anything of value.
DGR> Odd considering the '70s was the time of the bench clearing brawls
DGR> (which were eliminated in the early '80s) and the record setting PIMs
DGR> that it took 20 years for you to be fed up with it.
Maybe you should read what I wrote instead of reading INTO it. I was fed up
with it LONG AGO. It's only been recently that I cut off nearly all my ties
to the NHL (and that consists of knowing who won the Stanley Cup).
DGR> You're I'm going to disagree, surely you didn't think they kept
DGR> John Ferguson for his playing ability?
PUHleeze. Compared to the rest of the teams in the NHL, these guys were
sissies. Toronto had more goons in a couple of years than Montreal had in a
decade.
DGR> The Flyers would not have won those cups had they also not had
DGR> superb talent in the likes Bobby Clarke, Reggie Leach, and Bernie
DGR> Parent.
AND the intimidation factor. Parent made up for a hell of a lot. That team
had talent but it wasn't as talented as others (If it was, they wouldn't have
needed the goons).
DGR> I know doesn't count.) There you go, your argument isn't without
DGR> merit from a dry statistical point of view.
Dry, statistical point of view, my fanny. It's valid from every angle
available. The game's had too many goons for my tastes and that's why I don't
give a rat's butt about the NHL. I think that a league has its priorities
screwed up when it hands out a 1/2 season suspension for someone who has been
popped for drugs but doesn't give the same kind of penalty to someone who
carves up another player like a steak.
